Our Story

The Backpack Academy is a math and science 501c3 agency. The organization opened in 2011 and grew out of an idea to provide FREE math and science support to school aged youth who lived in Rainier Valley. While studying to earn a teachers' certification, the President was challenged to pass a state test. Turning frustration into power, she decided to open an agency teaching youth the basic fundamentals of physics.

Opening its doors in Rainier Valley, the agency first opened in a dedicated space located in a church. When the church was sold, the agency moved its headquarters into the President's family home where she converted the space into a school. Each week not only were FREE educational services provided to the community, but students were served a hot meal. In 2016 the family home was sold and since that time educational services have lived in community and public spaces (libraries, community centers, and schools). In 2020 the agency added a Zoom virtual presence.
